The most recent Criminal Minds reboot update gives a hint that Spencer Reid will eventually return. It was revealed that the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) is returning for more unsub hunting not long after the team's tenure on CBS came to an end. While the majority of the show's core cast members have been verified to make a comeback, Matthew Gray Gubler has not, raising questions about Spencer Reid, the team's boy genius.

Seven key characters made up Criminal Minds when it first aired in 2005. A number of personnel adjustments have since taken place at the BAU, including significant departures from Thomas Gibson’s Aaron Hotchner Thomas Gibson and Shemar Moore’s Derek Morgan. Gubler’s Spencer Reid and A.J. Cook’s "JJ" Jareau were the only initial members still present as the show wrapped. Reid isn’t just among the most experienced members of BAU, but he’s one of the team’s most valuable resources as well, because of his extensive knowledge and eidetic memory.

It should go without saying that Gubler is a fan favorite, and his possible departure from the show’s season 16 would surely be felt. However, there may be some positive news since the planned Paramount+ reboot may eventually feature BAU's golden boy. Paget Brewster lately provided an update on the Criminal Minds reboot, stating that although there are no firm plans in place just yet, work has been completed behind the scenes to advance the project. She claims that the returning cast members have all previously consented to come back and are simply awaiting contract agreements. Paige didn't specifically mention Gubler, but the fact that she stated that all of the primary cast members are open to repeat their roles raises the possibility that the Gubler will. His Spencer Reid had appeared on Criminal Minds for a longer period of time, so it would have been unusual if she hadn't intended to involve him.

Spencer Reid's anticipated absence from Criminal Minds season 16 may have been justified in any event. After years of collaboration, Reid and JJ's long-hidden admiration for one another became apparent. There was some temporary friction between them as a result of this. They ultimately came to the conclusion that it would be best to continue being just best friends and coworkers, especially considering that JJ is married with two small children. Reid, on the other hand, went on by initiating a relationship with Rachel Leigh Cook’s Maxine. Even so, it's still feasible that Reid would find it challenging to spend every day with JJ, which is the reason he chose to quit the BAU and concentrate on his teaching instead. Teaching is a fantastic use of his brain in a way that still benefits the FBI, though it doesn't get him fielded all over the nation.

Even if it would appear that Matthew Gray Gubler might return for Paramount+'s Criminal Minds reboot, it's important to remember that the project may not actually proceed. Brewster said she's delicately positive, but there's still a possibility that it won't occur until their terms are met and the pilot is filmed. But if it does, the BAU might come back to television with its original cast if Spencer Reid does actually stay on as a profiler.
